Here are some of the keys to maximize your Web efforts, increase traffic, conversions, average order value and placement in search engines.

1. Provide intuitive navigation … don’t feel the need to be a pioneer. Web visitors have become accustomed to a few navigation schemes that work quite well … this is not the place to show-off your creativity.

2. Proof-read your content. Embarrassing typos, misspellings and poor grammar will kill your credibility and likely get the visitor to click to the next site.

3. Make sure your pages load quickly with optimized images that use the web palette.  Slow loading pages are an invitation to your customers to click on to the next site.

4. Don’t forget systems security. If your not comfortable with the technical aspects, outsource to someone reputable to make sure you're up to date on patches and your site is as impenetrable as possible.

5. Keep important information above the fold. Don’t make your visitor have to scroll to reach the meat of the content … they probably won’t.

6. Test your site early and test it often. Forget who you are … be a customer. Make sure all links work.

7. Monitor traffic capability and load test your e-commerce site. There are many 3rd party tools and services that simulate load factors.

8. Add cross-sell and up-sell opportunities throughout your site.

9. Make every page a selling opportunity. Be sure to prominently display your contact information on every page. Also include customer service contact information on every page, close to the top. Make it easy to find and contact customer service in the form of a real person. Also, clearly state your company's return policy.

10. If you haven't optimized your site for the search engines or tested paid search, you're missing out on significant sales opportunities.
